    Polk County Public Works will be conducting an Adopt-A-Road cleanup day on Saturday, May 3, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. rain or shine. Over 60 groups are members of the Adopt-A-Road program and they help keep our County road system free of debris not only on the designated days (two times a year, May and October) but a few also help out on their own time beyond the twice yearly commitment. We at Public Works appreciate their willingness to volunteer and their effort helps to keep our roads and the County free of litter and beautiful.

    Polk County has created a new organization structure for what was formally known as Polk County Health and Human Services (HHS).  Previously, HHS consisted of Mental Health, Public Health, and the Commission for Children and Families/Service Integration.  The same HHS services will now be offered under the structure of two newly formed departments, Health Services and Family & Community Outreach.  The two departments are committed to working collaboratively with one another to serve individuals and families in the community.

    On September 11, 2013, Sgt. Tyrone Jenkins, of the Polk County Sheriff's Office, was presented with the Professional Rescue Hero award at the 9th annual American Red Cross Willamette Chapter Real Heroes breakfast held in Salem.  A total of 17 heroes were presented with various honors during the event.

    Detective Burney Krauger retired from the Polk County Sheriff's Office on June 30, 2013 after 22 years of law enforcement. On July 23, 2013, the Salem office of the FBI arranged to have Detective Krauger present at the Polk County Sheriff's Office to present him with a letter from the Director of the FBI, Robert S. Mueller, III.

    The Polk County Sheriff's Office expects to save more than $20,000 annually by running 10 patrol cars on propane autogas.  The fleet conversion began in March 2013 and recently completed.  The Sheriff's Office converted seven Ford Crown Victoria's, two Chevy Tahoe's, and one Ford F-350 pickup with the Prins VSI bi-fuel autogas system through the Alliance AutoGas program.  Auto Additions of Salem performed the vehicle conversions, while Blue Star Gas furnished the autogas fuel station and delivers year-round fuel supply.

    On May 28, 2013, the Polk County Inter-Agency Narcotics Team (POINT) served nine search warrants to conclude a 3 ½ month racketeering investigation that spread through three counties, including an illegal marijuana dispensary on Highway 22 in West Salem.  The POINT team consists of members of the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the Oregon State Police, and the Dallas, Independence, and Monmouth Police Departments.

    Polk County Commissioners adopted a new livestock ordinance to address the issue of "Livestock at Large."  Sheriff Bob Wolfe stated, "Late last year members of the Polk County Livestock Association, along with members of the Polk County Farm Bureau, worked with my office to address changing the charge of livestock at large from a misdemeanor to a violation."  It only makes sense to provide for a process that allows for failure to comply with the livestock district compliance requirements to be handled as a violation instead of a misdemeanor.
