Polk County Drug Take-Back

POLK COUNTY DRUG TAKE BACK NETS 124 POUNDS

The Polk County Sheriff's Office assisted by other local agencies participated in a Drug Enforcement Agency Drug Take-Back Program on Saturday, September 29, 2012.  Deputy Shon Latty of the Polk County Sheriff's Office put the program together, working with local law enforcement and fire departments as collection sites.  Sheriff Bob Wolfe stated, "This program has been very successful and beneficial to the local community in removing unwanted prescription medications from homes and medicine cabinets."

Eighty-two citizens took part in the program dropping off a total of 124 pounds of prescription medications that were expired or no longer wanted.  "Keeping these medications out of the wrong hands and our sewer system provides for a safer community," stated Sheriff Bob Wolfe.

Too often, people will dispose of these medications by putting them into the sewer system, which  creates water quality issues for local water treatment plants.  More importantly, proper disposal keeps these medications from falling into the wrong hands, and protects our children from the temptation of taking unused prescription drugs.

We appreciate the citizens who participated in the program, and applaud the Drug Enforcement Administration for working with local public safety agencies for such a successful program.
